VENOUS STASIS ULCER

Venous ulcers also known as the venous stasis ulcer remains to be the most common cause of chronic leg ulcers.  It occurs in about 20-25 % of patients with chronic venous insufficiencies.   It is usually found at the medial malleolar area or the medial ankle.   Leg swelling, hyperpigmentation, lipodermatosclerosis as well as bulging leg veins may be present with the venous ulcer.

Venous stasis ulcer is a slowly progressive leg ulcer and can be difficult to heal.   It has a tendency to recur up until the venous disease has been properly addressed and treated.     Proper wound care management by a wound care specialist is as important as having a vascular surgeon address and care for the venous insufficiency.
